FAQs

Operations & Transparency

  • It typically takes 3 to 6 months from the time your works are registered before royalties start appearing in reports. This is due to how long collection societies take to process usage data and issue payments.

  • Right now, you’ll receive detailed, transparent royalty reports quarterly, but we’re working on rolling out a client portal for easier access to real-time overviews in the near future.

  • We’re not legal mediators, but we’ll help flag and document the issue, notify all parties, and pause any related payments until it's resolved.

  • Our primary registrations are with U.S.-based collection agencies like ASCAP, BMI, SoundExchange. SongTrust, however, collects royalties from global PROs so rest assured you will still get what you are owed.

  • Yes, our agreement is non-exclusive. You keep full ownership of your catalog and can still pursue other publishing or sync deals.

  • You can cancel at any time. We'll deactivate your registrations moving forward and make sure you're paid any royalties still owed. Any data we’ve registered on your behalf can be transferred to you or your new rep upon request.

  • You do. We act on your behalf as an administrator. You retain ownership of your works and the rights to all your metadata and registrations.

Contracts & Control

    • Song titles

    • Writers and splits

    • Performing artists

    • Release dates

    • ISRC/ISWC codes (if available)

    • Audio files aren’t necessary unless you opt into sync licensing opportunities.

  • Not yet, but in the future we will offer this as an add-on service. We will be able to handle the registration for you, or walk you through the process step-by-step. For now, we can still point you in the right direction.

  • Absolutely. We’ll make sure the music is registered properly before release, and can also help distribute it across streaming platforms if needed.

Setup & Support

  • The Opening Act and Rockstar plans come with optional 1-on-1 support. We’ll help break down your royalty reports and show you how everything flows so you’re not left in the dark.

  • For Opening Act and Rockstar plans, we submit music to curated sync opportunities, and we’re growing relationships with music supervisors. While we’re not a traditional sync agency (yet), our placement network is always expanding.

  • We’re currently working with a mix of indie artists, producers, and small labels, with success stories ranging from first royalty payouts to sync placements!

Miscellaneous

We make royalty collection easy by handling everything in one place. No need for multiple accounts on different platforms. This means artists get paid faster and can focus on making music, not managing admin.

Why Big Oats?

Most artists who are unfamiliar with the intracacies of the music business leave royalties on the table that never get collected. We want to make sure you are collecting everything you are owed.

Why is this important?

To legally upload a cover song to digital downloading sites, you must obtain a compulsory mechanical license. We can assist with that, but please note that covers will not be elligable for most of our services as the musical composition is owned by the original writer.

What about cover songs?

We will ensure that all of your old releases get uploaded in a timely manner and you just might get a big check from previously unpaid royalties. Contact us to discuss your catalog.
